KUMIKO

The Kumiko Shelf was designed for the Cabinetmakers autumn Exhibition in 2019 with the theme "Re-think Re-duce Re-use"

Re-think: Rethinking the traditional Japanese Kumiko technique.

Re-use: The size of the individual components enables Rasmus Fenhann to use small pieces of wood from his workshop or re-use precious wood from end-of-life furniture.

Re-duce: In the KUMIKO shelf, material use has been reduced to a minimum thanks to strong joint techniques.

Process

The Kumiko shelves are made using traditional Japanese techniques from Japanese and hand tools. The dimensions are kept to the absolute minimal, getting close to the feeling of building a miniature dolls house.

Inspiration

Rasmus Fenhann studied the Kumiko technique with Master craftsman Norio Fukushima in Kanazawa, Japan. Mr. Fukushima is mastering many of the most fascinating woodworking techniques in Japan and working with him inspired Rasmus in many of his later works.
