EBANO is a monolithic and tactile cabinet that Rasmus Fenhann made for the Cabinetmakers Autumn Exhibition in 2018. This work represents another side of his work, which he also likes a lot.
The material decides and often some materials are used, which are either recycled from end-of-life furniture or which in this case Fenhann received as a gift from an old carpenter who had saved them for decades.
EBANO is completely covered in Ebony pieces, all of which are offcuts from the outside of the ebony tree trunks that decades ago have been roughly hewn in the woods with axes and chainsaws leaving very beautiful and unique surface marks.
Process
Rasmus Fenhann managed to juggle the pieces together into a harmonious surface that could cover a monolithic column piece of furniture.
He chose to make seven drawers for the cabinet, so that you have to interact with the wood in the surface when you have to open the drawers.
It was a big challenge to get the patterns in the pieces of wood to fit around the pillar and it required all corners to be cut in 45 degree bevel.
The project was supported by the Danish Art Foundation.
